Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. However, her parents did not allow her to act until she reached the age of adulthood because of the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry confessed that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. However, she began performing as a means to make friends during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry began her career in New York after graduation, landing minor roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California and find work as a stage actress. The Other Place was performed by her and her mother on Broadway in 2013 The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, she had a minor role on the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. She was also cast in her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The character was picked via auditions though she had a close connection with it.
